CONTROL OF THE STRESS-STRAIN STATE IN THE ROCKS AROUND THE PREPARATORY ROADWAY SUPPORTED BEHIND THE LONGWALL

Abstract.

Ensuring of stability for the preparatory roadway in zone under the impact of winning operations is one of the main problems arising for the coal mines. Purpose of the research presented in this paper is to study changes in the rock stress-strain state around the preparatory roadway when the roadway enters a zone of supports behind the longwall and, basing on the findings, to create a method for preparatory roadway supporting behind the longwall.

The study was conducted by a finite element method. The simulation shows that with the rigid protective constructions erected after the failure of immediate roof, there are two characteristic zones with utmost maximum principal stress in the main roof, which, from the side of the seam, exceed 5 times the tensile strength. It means that the most probable failure of the main roof could happen from the side of the seams, and after this the broken-down rocks by their full weights would lean on and deform supports of the preparatory roadway. The main reserve providing the roadway stability is to control time and place of the main roof failure on the border with the goaf to ensure the roof hanging. A method is proposed for the roadway protection which is based on the forced non-explosive failure of the rock cantilever, and the method effectiveness is demonstrated .
