Abstract.

The article describes the strata movement over the waste and role of the rock bedded structure. On the basis of the results obtained a calculation method was worked out for predicting a rock failure at primary and secondary basic roof breaks. It is stated that crack propagation in the curved rock layers with taking into account an effective surface energy (crack growth resistance) as a constant of the rock material in the layer helps to compute limiting spans of the rock layers before their failure. The equations created for determining first and the next rock failures help to predict steps of the roof breaks in the longwall on the stage of planning winning operations basing on the data of geological survey.
