The authors considers the existing regulatory framework of requirements for choosing ventilation scheme for the mine working areas, specifically around coal seams prone to spontaneous combustion. The gas-factor classification of ventilation schemes does not take into account methane drainage outside the working areas influenced by shifts of coal seams. Mining of any seams, regardless their type and degree of danger, requires special measures to prevent manifestation of hazardous properties of coal seams or reduce probability of emergency situations in the underground. One of the most important aspects of such measures is choosing of ventilation schemes for the mine working areas. It is recommended to use straight-through schemes in mine working areas.  It was assumed that, according to the classification, such schemes would provide full dilution of harmful substances throughout the sources of their flowing into the mine air and, in addition, take into account direction of the air jet emanating from the lava, mutual influence of the faces on their ventilation, direction of air moving along the mine and location of the fresh and return air jets. The experience of applying ventilation schemes in mine working areas in different mining, engineering and geological conditions made it possible to identify drawback of their classification by gas factor. Contradictions were detected in the requirements to the ventilation schemes for the cases of mining gas-bearing formations and their tendency to spontaneous combustion. The assignment of coal seams to the category of prone to spontaneous combustion and the establishment of their endogenous fire hazard groups do not fully determine the necessary mining, engineering and geological conditions for safe working environment.

Endogenous fires associated with direct operation of mine working areas, make up 25-30%. The conditions of their occurrence in other places differ significantly from the conditions and causes of such fires within the active mine working areas, and they are not directly related to the choice of ventilation schemes.

It is proposed to classify ventilation schemes according to specific signs of real danger of coal seams.

Keywords: working areas, ventilation schemes, classification, spontaneous combustion, endogenous fires, seam, coal.
